Fridge Water Filter FAQ
1) What’s the difference between an original and a replacement water filter?
An original filter is the one supplied with a new fridge (often carrying the fridge brand). We sell both original and replacement filters. The replacement filters we offer (by waterfilterdistributor and other manufacturers) use the same fittings and deliver comparable or better filtration performance depending on the model.
2) Do I need to buy the same brand as my fridge?
No. There are ~15 genuine filter types and 200+ model numbers that map to those types. Brands often relabel the same core filters. What matters most is:
- the fitting/connection matches, and
- the contaminant reduction claims match your original filter.
3) How long does a fridge filter last? How often should I change it?
Follow your fridge/filter manufacturer’s guidance: typically every 4, 6, 9, or 12 months, or sooner if you exceed capacity or notice reduced flow.
4) Why change every 6 months?
As filters adsorb and trap contaminants, flow and filtration performance decline. Over time, bacteria can colonise saturated media (even ice can be affected since some bacteria survive freezing). Once first wetted, change the cartridge every 6 months unless otherwise stated.
5) I use very little water—can I change less often?
Generally still every 6 months (unless your model specifies otherwise). Some manufacturers also advise a change if the dispenser hasn’t been used for several weeks.
6) Do fridge filters expire on the shelf?
No fixed shelf life if stored correctly. Keep filters dry, away from chemicals and temperature extremes. Many customers buy 2–3 at a time to save.
7) Does my fridge use an internal or external filter?
Internal (common locations):
- Ceiling of fridge compartment (vertical cartridge)
- Behind a plastic cover, usually horizontal, near top corners
- In the front grille at the bottom
External:
- Mounted outside the fridge in-line on the ¼" (6.35 mm) water line (ideally upright on brackets)
8) How do I pick the right replacement for my AU/US-style fridge?
From the menu, select your manufacturer, then:
- Choose the filter model number matching your cartridge, or
- Contact us with fridge brand/model, filter brand/model, and filter location (internal/external).
9) Can I recycle my old filter?
Manufacturer-run recycling programs are uncommon. Filters typically contain a plastic pressure housing filled with granular activated carbon. Please dispose of used filters responsibly per local guidelines.
10) What contaminants does a fridge filter remove?
Most fridge filters are designed to reduce particulates, chlorine (taste/odour) and selected organic compounds; some models also reduce dissolved solids (e.g., via RO). See Filter Quality on this site for model-specific claims.
11) Where are your filters made?
Country of manufacture is listed. Our original filters are genuine. Our replacement filters are made in Australia, Korea, the USA, or Europe, or are certified to relevant NSF standards by reputable manufacturers.
12) How will I know when to change the filter?
Many side-by-side fridges include a filter indicator light/counter (turns red or reaches 0). Otherwise, record the install date on the cartridge. We also offer a free email reminder ~10 days before your next change.
13) Is it easy to change the cartridge?
Yes. Most cartridges include printed instructions. We also provide general guides and, for selected models, YouTube installation videos.
14) How tight should I install it?
Hand-tighten only. Most internal cartridges reach a positive stop with about a ¼ to ½ turn. Do not use tools.
15) How do I reset the filter change light?
Reset is manual and brand-specific. Check your user manual. Common methods include:

16) Will using a compatible filter void my fridge warranty?
Typically no, but always check your manufacturer’s warranty terms and applicable Australian Consumer Law.
17) I’m buying a new American-style fridge. Internal vs external filter?
- Some internal filters carry NSF 42 & 53 certification (NSF 53 models reduce more contaminant types).
- External filters are generally more economical, commonly NSF 42, and often have longer capacity (e.g., our R200 Series A ~12 months). They also save internal space.
- Access for replacement may be easier with internal filters depending on installation.
18) My model shows an external filter, but my fridge uses an internal one—what should I buy?
Some side-by-side models ship with either internal or external filtration. Search by filter number/photo that matches your cartridge. Still unsure? Contact us with:
- Fridge: make & model
- Filter: make & model
- Location: internal or external
19) My internal filter is expensive. Can I install the bypass and use an external filter?
Yes—if you have access to the ¼" (6.35 mm) water line. Make a clean, square cut and connect the inline filter. No special tools needed; our external filters use standard ¼" connectors. Mount upright (inlet bottom → outlet top). If in doubt, seek a qualified professional.
20) Can I run my fridge without a filter (or with the internal bypass)?
If your tap water is microbiologically safe, you can run without a filter—it’s safer than using an overdue cartridge. Note: over time, limescale/impurities can build up and may affect the water/ice system.
21) How do I remove an old external inline cartridge?
- Remove the locking clips (red/blue) at each collet.
- Depress and hold the white collet, then pull the tubing straight out.
